Solar power and wind power are the main sources of renewable energy, and given the technological advances within the past few years it's very feasible to set up your own systems at home.

Off grid living would mean not being at the mercy of power cuts, or the energy company's decision to increase their prices once again. One of the advantages of off grid living is that you could live in some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the world without the need to rely on others to help you live comfortably.

You will however face challenges as you would be reliant on enough wind or sunshine to generate electricity. Ideally if you decide to go completely of grid you would be installing both solar panels and a wind turbine. You would also need batteries to store surpless energy for cloudy days, night time, or for days when there isn't enough wind to turn the blades of your windmill.

Depending on the size of your house and the amount of gadgets you have, such as tvs, laptops, fridge freezers, microwave ovens and washing machines depends on the amount of electricity you would need to generate in order to run them all. There is no reason why you would need to sacrifice any of these gadgets associated with modern living if you opt for off grid living

The initial outlay required to buy and install solar power and wind power systems can be very expensive, however once they are in place and working you will be generating all your electricity for free saving yourself $1000s. This initial cost can deter people from considering going off grid, however it's possible to make and install your own systems for much less.

You may be thinking that would be impossible as you don't have any diy skills worth talking about, however if you download and follow some clear and very easy to follow step by step instructions you could build your own windmill or solar panels in a couple of weekends for under $200.

You may decide to go off grid but still keep your connection to the power company in the initial stages. Try it for a while and see if it's successful. You know that you always have your power company to fall back on if it fails to work. When you feel confident then you could decide to break free and go completely off grid.

As well as living off grid you may also decide to grow your own produce making you even more self sufficient. Home grown vegetables and fruits are more nutritious as they can be harvested and on your plate in a very short time.
